A compact object, or a black hole, is seen ripping off gas from its' sun-like companion that has filled its' Roche Lobe. Gas from the star (called the donor) is pulled towards the black hole in an accretion disc, and as it spirals towards it, it heats up to hundreds of thousands or eveb millions of degrees and thereby emits x-rays. The compact object could also have been a neutron star or a white dwarf. The donor is less massive than the compact object and can be a white dwarf, main sequence star, or a red giant.
