Albion Printing Press, historical artwork. Designed by R. W.Cope in 1820, this is an improved version by Hopkinson. The Albion was a development of the American 'Columbian' press designed some seven years earlier. Like the Columbian, the Albion used a series of levers and weights to exert pressure on the printing plate, rather than the cumbersome screw thread of earlier designs. Being lightweight, the Albion became very popular and was used by such notaries as William Morris. Artwork taken from History of wonderful inventions, 1849.
