Apollo 15 lunar surface exploration, August 1971. US astronaut James Irwin saluting next to the US flag by the Lunar Module (LM) 'Falcon' on the surface of the Moon during the Apollo 15 mission. This photograph was taken at the start of the mission's third lunar surface extravehicular activity (EVA-3). At far right is part of the Lunar Roving Vehicle, used for the first time during Apollo 15. In the background is Hadley Delta Mountain. Apollo 15 was the fourth manned mission to land on the Moon. 'Falcon' touched down in the Hadley region of the Moon on 30 July 1971. Astronauts David Scott and James Irwin spent a total of 18.5 hours outside their spacecraft, carrying out three exploration trips (EVAs) with the LRV. Photographed by Scott on 2 August 1971.
