About the Artwork

Apollonius of Perga, Greek mathematician - Item # 1153205

Apollonius of Perga (c.262 BC-c.190 BC), Greek mathematician and astronomer, demonstrating his mathematical theories in Egypt. Apollonius (lower right), was born in Perga, Asia Minor (now Turkey), but as a young man he moved to Alexandria, Egypt, where the leading scholars of the time studied. He remained in Alexandria, studying and teaching, and eventually died there. Both Asia Minor and Egypt were within the Hellenistic (Greek) sphere of influence, and the leading scholars and tutors were mostly of Greek origin. Apollonius's major work was an eight-volume treatise called Konica, where he described his theory of conic sections.
