The embolism (illustrated at lower centre) is usually caused by a blood clot and results in the interruption of the blood supply to part of the brain. A stroke is the damage caused to part of the brain by this interruption in blood supply. Sensation, movement, or function controlled by the damaged area is impaired. Strokes can be fatal and are a leading cause of death in developed countries.</p>
