<p>This photo shows the Boeing 707 jet prototype cruising high above the clouds during the initial phase of its flight test program. It also was revealed today that the sleek, four jet plane already has exceeded speeds of 550 miles per hour, and reached altitudes of more than 42,000 feet. In the eight days following its maiden flight (July 15) the big Boeing made seven test flights. Built as a $15 million private venture by Boeing, the new jet will be used as a demonstrator for military tanker-transport duties. In this role it would be known as the Jet Stratotanker, and would make possible jet speed global mobility for the U.S. Air Force. As a commercial transport, the big Boeing would be named the Jet Stratoliner, and be capable of carrying from 80 to 130 passengers at cruising speeds in the 550 miles per hour range.
