About the Artwork

C-reactive protein, molecular models - Item # 1134515

C-reactive protein, molecular models. Six molecules of the protein are seen, each highlighting a different structural property of the protein. At centre the atoms are individually shown as balls. At upper left and right, the secondary structure of the protein, with alpha helices and beta sheets, is shown. The models at lower left and right show the molecules' backbone. The protein is made up of five sub-units (monomers) arranged in a ring. C-reactive protein (CRP) is a blood plasma protein produced by the liver. It plays a role in the immune response, and its levels rise in response to inflammation.
