<p>Captain Macheath by H. Liverseege. This engraving by W. Ward, done in 1832, shows him after caputre, unbowed. Captain Macheath, a highwayman, is one of the central characters in The Beggars' Opera, This three act ballad opera was written in 1728 by John Gay. Using popular tunes of the period, it achieved instant success, and has remained popular to this day. In the 20th century, it was reinterpreted by Berthold Brecht and Kurt Weill.</p>
