About the Artwork
Flying Scotsman Steam Locomotive - Item # 2233224
Flying Scotsman, first of Nigel Gresley's class A1 LNER Pacific steam locomotives, hauls the 10a.m. non-stop express train to Edinburgh of the same name out of platform 8 of Kings Cross station at the start of its run up the East Coast Main Line. These imposing locomotives were introduced in 1923 by the Midland and Great Northern Railway. Flying Scotsman represented the LNER at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley in 1924/5. After comparative trials had demonstrated that the A1 class were less powerful than smaller locos on the GWR, Gresley turned to France for help. The resulting modifications transformed the class.
