Foot bones and ligaments. Historical anatomical artwork of foot bones (yellow) and ligaments (pale blue). Ligaments are bands of fibrous tissue that hold bones together at their joints. In the upper frame are four artworks, anticlockwise from left: the superficial (surface) ligaments of the top of the foot; deep ligaments of the top of the foot; superficial ligaments of the sole; deep ligaments of the sole. The toes are not shown in the deep ligaments artworks. A vertical section through a foot, seen from the side, is at bottom. At bottom right is part of the Achilles tendon. Artwork from The Bones and Ligaments of the Human Body (Ed. Jones Quain, 1842).
