Grey phalarope. Historical artwork of a grey phalarope (Phalaropus fulicarius). This migratory wading bird breeds in coastal areas in sub-Arctic Eurasia, and spends the winter off the coasts of western Africa. When breeding it prefers marshy tundra with sparse vegetation, but it spends the rest of its life out at sea. It feeds on marine plankton and small aquatic crustaceans and other invertebrates. This artwork was drawn by Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935).
