4/27/1936-Beaumont, TX: The Glenn H. McCarthy Longe No. 1 Well, miles from the city of Beaumont, blew a gasser with an explosion that shook buildings throughout the city and lit up the area as bright as day at 1:30 in the morning. It burned for 18 hours and then automatically extinguished itself, though the gas column continued to flow. The blast destroyed an $80,000 derrick. A week later it started gushing oil, mud and water at the rate of 10,000 barrels a day. This is a view of the gusher before it was captured.
