Claude Monet. You simply cannot say the man's name without thinking of Impressionism.

One of the founders of the movement, Monet's art embodied the movement's philosophy of expressing one's self and their perception of nature. The Impressionist movement even took its name from one of his most famous paintings, Impression, Sunrise.

Monet was a man deeply affected by his surroundings, and that can be seen and felt throughout his art. His body of work is vast and is representative of different periods of his life, as well as of different events impacting him. An example of this can be seen in any of his works with weeping willows during World War One, with the trees representing the fallen French soldiers.

His constant depictions of the leisurely activities and the stunning landscapes of Paris and the Normandy coast at the time showcased his unique and unusual style that truly showcased the very depth and breadth of nature at its finest. The fine detail that transformed Monet's rough sketches of what people would consider most ordinary scenes or subjects were elevated into brilliant pieces of art that you can now savor in the peace of your own space.

Luscious Landscapes in Your Living Room

Capture the serenity and stillness of Monet's landscapes for yourself with one of Great Big Canvas' Claude Monet canvas prints or wall art pieces.
During his London campaigns, Claude Monet painted the Houses of Parliament in the late afternoon and at sunset from a terrace at Saint Thomas' Hospital. This viewpoint was close to that of the English artist J. M. W. Turner in his visionary paintings of the fire that had destroyed much of the old Parliament complex in 1834. In his response to the poetry of dusk and mist, however, Monet was actually inspired by the work of a more recent painter of the Thames, the American James McNeill Whistler.
