A large colony of flowering water lily, Nymphaea sp. , on the surface of a lake. The leaves and flowers of water lilies rise from a thick rootstock, held securely in the mud at the bottom of the shallow lake by long, tough roots. The leaves are round or heart-shaped with a shiny, leathery upper surface. They float on the surface of the water, except where overcrowding forces them upward. Photographed on Beaver Lake, British Columbia, Canada.
