Lung bronchioles. Artwork of the inside of the lung, showing the bronchioles (brown, banded), alveoli (cream, round) and blood vessels (red and blue). Air passes into the lungs through the trachea (wind pipe), which splits into two bronchi. The bronchi then further divide into bronchioles, which continue to divide and decrease in diameter. The bronchioles eventually end in groups of tiny air sacs, alveoli, which are surrounded by capillaries (see bottom left corner). This is the site of gaseous exchange; oxygen enters the capillaries and carbon dioxide leaves.
