About the Artwork

Organic synthesis - Item # 1135274

Organic synthesis. Steam distillation apparatus used to extract a product from a reaction mixture. In this case, the product being extracted from the pear-shaped reaction flask is phenylamine. Bunsen burners are used to boil the water in the conical flask (left) and keep the reaction flask (centre) warm. Steam passes through the tube connecting the conical and reaction flasks, bubbling through the reaction mixture (yellow) and carrying phenylamine into the water-cooled condenser (right). The phenylamine is collected in the conical flask (bottom right). Phenylamine is used in the making of dyes, rubbers and medical drugs.
