Redshank. Historical artwork of a redshank (Tringa totanus). This shorebird inhabits coasts, estuaries and marshland across much of Europe and Asia. It is a migrant, and tends to breed inland in Europe and Asia, and spends the winter at the warmer coasts of Africa and southern Asia. It feeds mainly on shellfish and small crustaceans, which it probes for in soft wet mud with its long bill. It reaches a length of around 28 centimetres. This artwork was drawn by Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935).
