About the Artwork
Refractor telescope, 1928 - Item # 1154403
Refractor telescope in an observatory in Munich, Germany, 1928. This instrument was made by the Carl Zeiss company, a German optics business which made important advances in lens design and manufacture. Refractor telescopes use two lenses. The first, the objective lens, gathers light from the front of the telescope and focuses it to a point. The second, the eyepiece lens, brings the bright image from this focus and magnifies it to the size of the observer's pupil.
