<p>Sir John Hawkins. Hawkins was lucky to escape with his life when, in 1557, a large Spanish fleet came upon his ships in the port of San Juan d'Ulloa, in the Gulf of Mexico. Only two of his ships survived the attack and it was to be several years before Hawkins set out on another expedition.</p>
