Item # 2584164

Uchytel, Roman

Steppe mammoth (Mammuthus trogontherii). Illustration and photo-reconstruction of a disgruntled steppe Mammoth chasing away two Homotheria. The steppe mammoth is one of the biggest proboscidea of all time. It lived in what is now Eurasia in the Pleistocene age and went extinct more than 300,000 years ago. The giant weighed up to 10 tonnes and was over 4 meters tall at the shoulders. Its five-meter tusks were not as curved as those of the more recent woolly mammoth, the steppe mammoth's descendant. It lived in steppe regions and forest land, but was one of the first species that adapted well to cold regions due to its thick fur.
