About the Artwork
TEM of Proteus mirabilis bacterium - Item # 1136787
False-colour transmission electron micrograph of the bacterium Proteus mirabilis. It is an enterobacterium which is present normally in the human intestine, although it has potential pathogenic qualities. Infections of the urinary tract are the most common diseases caused by P. mirabilis. Often such infections occur in hospitals as a secondary infection in debilitated patients. This gram-negative bacillus has flagella (hair-like structures) on its surface. The movement of the flagella gives the bacterium its mobility, enabling Proteus strains to spread rapidly. Magnification: x6000 at 6x4.5cm size.
