About the Artwork

Tesla Spark Discharge Experiment, Circa 1899 - Item # 2584176

Tesla spark discharge experiment. 80-centimetre-wide ball being used in wireless (radio) tests by Serb-US physicist and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) in his laboratory at Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA. Tesla operated this laboratory from 1899 to 1900. The coil named after Tesla is a type of resonant transformer that is used to produce high-voltage, low-current, high-frequency alternating current electricity. Tesla's research led to key advances in areas such as alternating current power generation and transmission. The SI unit of magnetic flux density is named in his honour.
