The Column of Axum

Item # 2320795

This striking monolithic monument, the Column of Axum, is the subject of a current international controversy. The obelisk is being claimed back by the Ethiopian government and, at the same time, threatened with destruction by a Neo-Fascist group in Rome. The pillar, carved in typical Abyssinian style, was brought to Rome as a war trophy by the Mussolini government leader Marshal Rodolfo Graziani, when Italian Fascists conquered Ethiopia in 1936. The present Ethiopian government has formally requested Italy to restore the ancient monument, but an underground new Fascist organization has declared it will destroy the obelisk before permitting it to be sent back to Ethiopia. The Column of Axum faces the archaeological promenade and the famous Caracalla baths in Rome.
