TSS-1 tethered satellite. Artwork showing the tethered satellite system (TSS-1) deployed from the Space Shuttle Atlantis during mission STS-46 in 1992. TSS-1 was designed to investigate the possibilities of generating electricity as the conducting tether passed through the Earth's magnetic field (pink lines and yellow coils). The tether should have reeled out to 20 kilometres, but a jam in the reeling mechanism prevented deployment further than 256 metres.
