<p>The world's largest helicopter, Howard Hughes' big XH-17, makes its first public appearance in Culver City. The 36-foot-high craft, with rotor blades measuring 125 feet tip-to-tip, climbed to a 50-foot elevation and remained airborne for nine minutes. The huge flying crane lifted with a deafening roar and a downwash that bowled over one cameraman and sent hats and coats flying. Test pilot Gale Moore was accompanied by two passengers.</p>
