Born in 1776, John Constable was an English Romantic painter who was known for painting landscapes of the countryside. He helped to develop painting en plein air and depicted natural scenes with fresh and spontaneous compositions. He also worked with watercolors, portraiture, and a technique that later influenced Impressionism. Although Constable did not have financial success from his art during his lifetime, his paintings are some of the most valuable pieces of art in Britain today.
